Yarn Weights and Yarn Label

When you choose a pattern, one of the first things you should look at is the weight of yarn that is called for in the pattern. You’ll find this in the supplies or materials list. These days there are many different names that you may come across to indicate the weight of the yarn. The reason for that is several years ago a new naming system along with a number designation was implemented. So while most yarn labels have probably caught up with the new naming system, there are still patterns available for sale that were published previously.

Below, you can find a chart that I made for myself to keep on my phone. Feel free to save it to your computer for your own use. The chart contains the new yarn weight names along with the corresponding old names, as well as other information that is explained in the video. You should keep in mind that the larger the number designation, the “fatter” the yarn.

The first video will be a brief overview for a true yarn novice about different weights of yarn. The second video will be about the information found on a yarn label. Let’s knit y’all!
